Here is Ryan talking about the new song: “I grew up in a suburb of Seattle, WA, called Mercer Island. It’s an actual island (I believe the most populous freshwater island in the USA) with bridges to Seattle and the eastside suburb of Bellevue, where my dad now lives. My neighborhood on Mercer Island was called Dawn Villa. Again, playing on the themes of the filters of memory and time, this song is a reflection of my time from 1976-1990, growing up in this remarkable neighborhood.”
Out of bounds is the stump
And Cul de sac
King Mike on his throne
You better watch your back
You wanna bet?
He was a threat
We had hydro sparks
And fights
At the Dragon Park
Under the web
We made our mark
Always a game
Calling your name
There’s no doubt we had it all
Feeling that Dawn Villa beat
Kicking up 61st street
Meet at the top of the hill
Meet me at the top of Smith Hill…
Summers passed
And we knew it couldn’t last
Then we met death
And it took our breath
Loud and gray
The Blue Angels flew away
Next door
A friend no more
Arc of youth
The sting of truth
Then it got real
Easy to steal
Broken locks and court appeals
Feeling that Dawn Villa heat
Burn at the end of the street
Meet me at the top of Smith Hill
But looking back
The greatest laugh
Beyond belief-
Barry threw that deadly leaf
And we went down
Knocked us out
When he played dead
There’s no doubt-
We had it all
Broken Locks
